Abstract
Introduction to special issue. No abstract available.

Main finding
The authors find that the provision of public space enjoys enormous broad based popular support but recent political and economic shifts have accelerated changes in the way cities provide and manage public space. New trends in public space provision and management such as increasingly privatization, emphasis on security, production of a consumption-based environment, and informal community and neighbourhood-based initiatives, are challenging traditional functions of parks, plazas, sidewalks and atria.
